Dark Shadows - Tv Series Review

Via Series Season
Last night I finished watching the 1991 tv series Dark Shadows, starring Ben Cross, as the vampire Barnabus Collins. Over all, it was a very interesting series, involving vampires, ghosts, witches, and time travel. While the lead actress, Joanna Going, who played Victoria Winters, was very beautiful, I found her character to be very dull and boring. She pretty much played the beautiful innocent virgin, with no hobbies or interests, opinions, or life goals....

However I did find some characters very well developed and interesting. Angelique, the evil witch, would stop at nothing to have Barnabus all to herself - even if that meant destroying the whole Collins clan! Barnabus himself was a very interesting character. It's refreshing to see vampires portrayed in a more traditional style, after watching Twilight and Vampire Diaries. You could feel sympathy for the torture he was going through, but also fear, because at any moment he might really snap and rip your throat out. I really liked Willie, the 'servant' too. His character started off as the type of person you would normally avoid, or be kind of disgusted by, with his rotten teeth, and aggressive, rude attitude - but when he meets Barnabus, he starts to grow into a very loveable, kind, and sympathetic character (perhaps my favourite character).

I was sad to find that the series ended at episode 12, with a cliffhanger. There were also quite a few unresolved plot points, like Mr. Collins wife who was in an asylum, who possessing her son to try and hurt her husband. I wonder what would have happened there? Would Victoria have saved the son? Hmm...

Either way, I did enjoy parts of the series, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to try a vampire soap opera, lol. I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie starring Johnny Depp, but from the trailers, I can see that the mood is entirely different from the 1991 version of the show.

Have you guys seen Dark Shadows? Looking forward to the new movie?  Here's the trailer for the new movie, as well as the old show.

As you can see, they're both silly, but have very different 'moods'. ^_^
